Nau mai ki a Matariki me Te Karanga-a-Hape!
One of Tāmaki Makaurau’s most beloved Matariki celebrations returns on Thursday 9 July, transforming Karangahape Road into a free, all-day journey of light, music, storytelling and connection. Te Karanga-a-Hape invites communities from across Tāmaki Makaurau and beyond to gather, reflect and celebrate the Māori New Year together.
The entire length of the road will come alive and you can connect with the stars of Matariki through tāonga toi special art installations, pūoro sound and live music, wānanga and making, kanikani dancing and delicious kai.
You are invited to discover and connect with the Whetū of Matariki through Taonga Toi, Pūoro, Wānanga, Kanikani and Kai.
Each whetū of Matariki can be found in a place along Karangahape Road, held within an installation that invites you to participate in an offering to the stars.
The stars encourage you to cherish your loved ones, appreciate where and who you are today and invite you to imagine what the future could hold for your communities.
We are humbled to welcome artists who have answered the call to move through this special time with us:
- MĀ (with full band)
- LADI6
- Noa Records presents: WAIWHAI
- Halfqueen
We have more to share as we get closer to the day! A map within a special zine will help you discover, explore and connect to the stars as you journey along the path.
Come be warm with your whānau and immerse yourself in the mauri of Karangahape Road.
